Let’s Talk About Food: Culture, Evolution, Taste and Politics – Eisenhower’s Heart Attack and the Mediterranean Diet

America was shocked in 1955 when President Eisenhower suffered a heart attack.  While it was more likely a result of his heavy smoking habit, his heart attack prompted a solution to be offered to a nation with a rising rate of heart disease.  How the nation ate was to change.  The creator of K-rations, Physiologist and Nutritionist Ancel Keys identified saturated fat the culprit responsible for the heart attack and the Mediterranean diet as the solution.  Today, the Mediterranean diet is a staple, a go-to for healthy eating.  As a part of culture, it is included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage List.  Countries like Greece, Spain, Morocco and Portugal are at the list’s origin.  But what is it and what does this mean?
