America was shocked in 1955 when President Eisenhower suffered a heart attack. While it was more likely a result of his heavy smoking habit, his heart attack prompted a solution to be offered to a nation with a rising rate of heart disease. How the nation ate was to change. The creator of K-rations, Physiologist and Nutritionist Ancel Keys identified saturated fat the culprit responsible for the heart attack and the Mediterranean diet as the solution. Today, the Mediterranean diet is a staple, a go-to for healthy eating. As a part of culture, it is included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
